Mr Smith’s bar to extend drinking hours
A Cardiff bar is planning to extend its opening hours until 1.30am.
Mr Smith’s, on Woodville Road, Cathays, is currently open until 12am on weekdays and 12.30am on Fridays and Saturdays but they want to be open for an extra hour every evening.
The bar has applied for permission from Cardiff Council for an upgrade on their current licence and hopes to have it approved in time for Valentine’s Day.
Bar manager Andrew Braddick said: “We just want to extend the nights a bit as 12am is not late enough when we have DJs playing.
“They have only just started getting going by that point, and we want people to be able to make more of a night of it.
“All of the other bars owned by Beatbox Bars, like Ten Feet Tall, are basically the last places people can get drinks in town. We also want to have more weekly events and different music styles. We’re waiting for the council to respond.”
Woodville Road resident John Mitchell, 21, said: “Woodville Road is quite a busy road at night anyway, so the extended hours wouldn’t be a massive change. I don’t think the noise would bother us here.”

I find that I can barely get a good nights sleep on Woodville Road as it is! For a downstairs front room resident of a student house on this road I find the noise at night – particularly the big student nights sometimes ridiculous and nearly as bad as living in halls of residence. But having said that, if Mr Smiths was to get it’s license I doubt it would make much difference.
