Album review: Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip – Logic of Chance
Musing on “How we came to live in unforgiving despair,” the incomparable stylings of Dan le Sac and Scroobius Pip effortlessly produce the thought-provoking social commentary many have failed to elucidate.
Logic of Chance continues where debut release Angles left off, showcasing the unique blend of Le Sac’s versatile beats and Pip’s urban poetry.
The Essex duo waste no time in re-announcing themselves with opener Sick Tonight, a burst of energy and lyrical flexibility. They are not afraid of setting the bar high, and with only a couple of exceptions this standard is maintained throughout the album.
Penultimate track Snob encapsulates the genre-hopping defiance of Le Sac and Pip, setting their work up as something “accessible” on the basis of its quality rather than its inoffensiveness.
And indeed anyone easily offended ought to bear in mind the range of subject matter: rape, teenage pregnancy and knife-crime (as detailed in an unnatural-yet-significant interlude during Great Britain) to name but three.
But the dystopian horror is tempered by an uplifting message of the kind first dwelt on in Fixed, a track from the duo’s debut. It is clear self-improvement is the key, and it is only fitting that this comes across through a willingness to experiment both musically and lyrically.
As Pip so tellingly urges his listeners on lead single Get Better, “The system may have failed you, but don’t fail yourself.”
Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip have a sold-out gig at Cardiff Barfly coming up on April 20.
